Atari Interactive, in partnership with Activision, unveiled at the recent Gamescom event in Germany a lineup of 39 classic games from Activision’s early days to be reissued on physical cartridges. Among the titles are renowned classics like “Pitfall,” “River Raid,” and “Megamania.” These games are playable on the newly released Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original 1977 Atari 2600 console. The updated console supports wireless joysticks and HDMI connectivity to modern TVs.
The Atari 2600+ was launched in 2023 alongside revamped versions of iconic games such as “Pac-Man,” “Galaga,” and “Dig Dug.” The console is also compatible with original cartridges from the Atari 2600 and 7800 systems, offering a nostalgic gaming experience. Moreover, the new releases are backward compatible, allowing them to be played on the original consoles for those who still possess them.
According to Mike Mika, studio head at Digital Eclipse, the enduring popularity of these classic games shows a continuous demand from players. The collaboration with Activision holds significance as it marks a reunion after more than 40 years. Activision, founded in 1979 by former Atari employees, is now a prominent player in the gaming industry with franchises like “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush Saga.”
Atari’s journey has been marked by various ownership transitions over the years. In recent times, under the leadership of CEO Ethan Zoubek, Atari has refocused on its retro gaming heritage, distancing itself from past controversial ventures. The company’s strategic moves include acquiring studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse, as well as launching nostalgic hardware like the Atari 2600+ console and accessories.
The reemergence of Atari in the gaming scene has been met with enthusiasm, especially from retro gaming enthusiasts. The company’s efforts to reconnect with its roots have resonated well with fans, including collaborations with original Atari artists to recreate classic box art. The success of initiatives like the “Atari 50” compilation and the Atari x Activision collection highlights a renewed appreciation for physical gaming experiences in an increasingly digital landscape.
As the gaming industry shifts towards digital distribution, Atari’s focus on physical media and nostalgic gaming experiences stands out. The return of classic black plastic cartridges, complete with original box art and manuals, appeals to a generation showing renewed interest in tangible game formats, similar to the resurgence of vinyl records among younger audiences.
Atari’s commitment to preserving the essence of retro gaming, combined with strategic partnerships and innovative releases, positions the iconic brand for a promising future in an ever-evolving gaming landscape.
