Conservation efforts to preserve a rare bird species in the United Kingdom have seen a significant boost, thanks to the remarkable breeding success of a male Montagu’s harrier named AU. Mark Thomas, a conservationist, credits AU for siring 16 offspring, with 10 born in the past two years alone. Montagu’s harriers, migratory birds of prey, winter in Africa and parts of Asia before returning to Europe for breeding. From a peak of 30 breeding pairs in the 1950s to zero in the ’70s, and a subsequent increase to 13 pairs in the mid-aughts followed by another decline, the species faced a critical situation.
AU’s exceptional reproductive success in recent years has been a beacon of hope for the species. His acrobatic mating displays and ability to attract multiple females have resulted in the birth of six chicks from two nests this year. Conservationists are optimistic that AU’s offspring, particularly his male descendants, will contribute to the population’s recovery. To safeguard the new hatchlings, researchers have implemented protective measures around the nests located on a British farm, ensuring their safety from predators and other risks.
In a new initiative, the RSPB has equipped two juvenile harriers with satellite trackers for the first time.
