150 corgis from various countries gathered for an international event celebrating the small herding dogs that originated in Wales. Corgi Race Vilnius, now in its fifth year, took place in Vingis Park, Lithuania, attracting dogs and their owners for a day of fun activities. Participants came from nine countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, Czech Republic, the United States, and Britain, the breed’s most famous country, linked to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s fondness for corgis.
Organizer Edvinas Miskas noted the event’s growth, with the number of participating corgis increasing from 40 in the first year to 150 this year, representing a diverse mix of nationalities. The main running competition featured 94 dogs, with American competitor GG, also known as Gustave the Girl Dog, emerging as the winner in the 25-meter final race. Mr. Corgington from the U.S. came in a close second, followed by Lithuania’s Moka, a former champion.
Apart from the speed race, the event included other contests showcasing the dogs’ talents and creativity. A costume parade displayed corgis in various outfits, with standout entries like a dinosaur suit and a knight-inspired look. In the “smartest nose” challenge, Latvian corgis Tora and Rusty shared the victory for finding hidden treats.
An exciting highlight was the loudest bark competition, won by Mr. Corgington. Notable for his extensive travel history and previous races, Mr. Corgington’s participation added to the event’s competitive spirit. While the event attracted many first-time participants, some veteran corgis, such as Amigo, Foksas, Foksis, Madeira, Bulka, and Dziugas, have been consistent attendees at every Corgi Race Vilnius edition, adding a touch of tradition to the growing international event.
