Conservative and Bloc MPs are urging an urgent meeting of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate espionage accusations against a former Canadian intern arrested by Belgian authorities for suspected espionage. Frank Caputo, a Conservative MP, expressed serious concerns about the allegations, questioning the effectiveness of Canada’s national security screening procedures.
The intern in question, Biwei Zhang, had worked at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. While Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News investigation revealed Zhang’s background as a systems engineer with an economics background and previous employment at the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada.
Reports from European media sources, including Reuters, suggest that Zhang engaged in suspicious behavior at SHAPE, including unauthorized access to restricted areas and files beyond her professional responsibilities. Despite these claims, the allegations against her have not been proven in court, as she is currently under detention in Belgium.
In response to the situation, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has pledged to investigate Canada’s security screening processes to prevent similar incidents in the future. The public safety committee plans to scrutinize how Zhang obtained the internship at NATO, the extent of security screening conducted before her appointment, any red flags raised by Canadian or allied authorities, and the adequacy of monitoring practices.
The case has sparked broader concerns regarding Canada’s security protocols, prompting a commitment from Anandasangaree to delve into Zhang’s possible connections with Canadian agencies. Prime Minister Mark Carney has also indicated that Canadian security authorities were aware of the situation before the arrest.
The parliamentary inquiry seeks to address these security lapses and ensure improved measures to safeguard sensitive information and national security interests.
