President Donald Trump has clashed with US intelligence agencies over the UK’s decision to transfer control of the remote Chagos islands, as suggested by Keir Starmer.
The President publicly criticized the deal last week, labeling it as “stupid” and an “act of total weakness,” despite the US previously supporting the agreement. His remarks raised concerns about his comprehension of the situation, questioning whether the UK’s motive was financial.
The agreement involves the UK relinquishing sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius after two centuries of British rule. Following this, the UK will enter into a 99-year lease for Diego Garcia, the largest island hosting a crucial US-UK military base, with an annual cost of £101 million to the UK.
Speaking en-route to China, Keir Starmer highlighted discussions with the White House following President Trump’s outburst. He emphasized that the Trump administration had conducted a thorough agency-level review before endorsing the deal.
UK government sources remain unfazed by Trump’s objections, attributing his reaction to frustrations over opposition to his ambitions to acquire Greenland. A delay in the House of Lords’ ratification of the deal occurred after Tory peers tabled an amendment.
A government spokesperson reaffirmed their commitment to the deal, emphasizing its importance for national security. Criticizing the peers’ actions as irresponsible, the spokesperson stressed their duty to scrutinize legislation without impeding national security priorities.
