Britons are advised to keep an eye out as certain regions of the United Kingdom may witness the Northern Lights today and tomorrow.
The UK’s Met Office has reported that a significant solar flare is en route to Earth, carrying charged particles that could illuminate the night sky in a potentially stunning spectacle. This solar flare, identified as a coronal mass ejection (CME), has the potential to bring the Aurora Borealis to northern parts of Britain, with a chance of visibility extending to southern areas.
The Met Office has indicated, “The exact timing of the CME’s arrival is uncertain, but sightings of the aurora are possible in northern regions of Britain and potentially in southern areas depending on cloud coverage.”
A rapid coronal mass ejection, a massive release of charged material from the Sun, departed from the Sun yesterday and is predicted to reach Earth either overnight on Monday or in the morning on Tuesday.
This event could lead to the appearance of the Northern Lights in the skies of the UK, especially over Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and potentially further south. However, the visibility of the phenomenon will hinge on when it arrives and the presence of cloud cover.
Krista Hammond, the Met Office Space Weather Manager, stated, “There is still uncertainty regarding the precise timing of the CME’s arrival, but it is expected either overnight tonight or tomorrow morning. The CME is likely to trigger geomagnetic disturbances, providing a chance to witness the aurora.”
“Nevertheless, sightings are reliant on the CME arriving during nighttime hours and under clear skies. Unfortunately, Tuesday evening’s cloud and rain may hinder visibility, even if the timing is favorable.”
Current weather maps show dense cloud cover over the UK from Monday night into Tuesday morning, potentially diminishing the opportunity for people to witness the Northern Lights.
As per the Met Office’s space weather forecast, “A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) that was emitted by the Sun on 18 Jan is anticipated to arrive late on 19 Jan or early on 20 Jan (UTC). Moderate to strong storms (G2-G3) are likely with a possibility of severe storm (G4) intervals.”
“This is expected to bring auroras across Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and potentially further south, although visibility will be contingent upon the timing of its arrival and cloud cover.”
The Met Office suggests that the thinnest cloud coverage is expected around 4 am on Tuesday morning, making it the optimal time to attempt observing the celestial display.
To catch a glimpse of the aurora, people are advised to find a dark location with minimal light pollution, face the northern horizon, and choose a time when cloud cover is at its lowest.
