An Australian woman recently uncovered a remarkable family revelation through a DNA test. Adriana Turk, daughter of a German Jewish father who fled Nazi Germany in 1937, grew up believing that her extended family perished in the Holocaust.
After the passing of her brother Julian in December 2024, Adriana delved deeper into her family history, anticipating only fragmentary details. To her astonishment, she discovered over 50 living relatives scattered worldwide.
Among her newfound family members were numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and their descendants. Through MyHeritage DNA, she also connected with the offspring of three Holocaust survivors from her grandmother’s lineage.
Reflecting on this unexpected revelation, Adriana expressed her initial disbelief in finding any surviving relatives. However, with the void left by her brother’s death, she embarked on a search that led to this profound discovery.
Recently, Adriana met one of her newfound relatives, her cousin Raanan Gidron, a 73-year-old psychotherapist residing in Israel. Mr. Gidron’s mother, a survivor of Theresienstadt and Auschwitz concentration camps, married a man who also lost his parents during the Holocaust.
Reconnecting with his cousin, Mr. Gidron shared that they had always known of relatives in New Zealand but had difficulty tracing them. Adriana, who spent much of her youth feeling neglected, now feels she has found a crucial missing link in her life.
As the world commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day, Adriana and Raanan’s story underscores the poignant journey of rediscovering lost family ties through DNA testing. Mr. Gidron emphasized that their reunion symbolizes hope amidst prevailing fears and anxieties within the Jewish community.
In light of recent tragic events, including the Bondi Beach attack where 15 individuals were killed, Mr. Gidron expressed his shaken sentiments. The attack, the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996, resulted in profound loss and mourning, including the tragic death of a 10-year-old girl.
The surviving suspect, Naveed Akram, faces numerous charges, including 15 counts of murder, according to New South Wales police. His father, Sajid Akram, succumbed to gunfire during a confrontation with law enforcement at the scene.
