The R&A is considering adjusting their schedule for The Open Championship’s conclusion to prevent a potential clash with the World Cup final. Scottie Scheffler is set to defend the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale this summer, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, July 19, coinciding with the football tournament’s finale at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The convergence of these two major events poses a challenge for the Open organizers, as Scheffler’s previous victory ceremony at Royal Portrush coincided with the World Cup final kick-off time. With an anticipated record crowd of 300,000 spectators at Birkdale, a potential playoff could lead to overlapping schedules and a loss of viewership for the R&A, especially if England advances in the tournament.
In response to inquiries about adjusting tee-times to avoid the clash, Chief Executive Mark Darbon acknowledged the awareness of concurrent events and expressed the intention to minimize conflicts as much as possible. While some factors like playoffs are beyond their control, efforts will be made to prevent scheduling conflicts. Darbon also mentioned the anticipation of an England-Scotland final and the excitement surrounding it.
Additionally, the R&A confirmed the return of The Open to Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028 after a 16-year hiatus. Highlighting the enhancements made to the golf course in recent years, Darbon expressed enthusiasm for bringing the event back to Lytham despite operational challenges, emphasizing the need for strategic management to ensure a successful modern Open Championship experience at the venue.
