A man who attacked a police officer with a chainsaw, intending to kill him, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Liridon Kastrati crashed a stolen Volkswagen into a marked police car before grabbing a chainsaw and pursuing PC Gary Cowan while shouting derogatory remarks towards law enforcement in Paisley, Scotland, on May 6, 2024. The 32-year-old, originally from Albania, had been warned of severe consequences for the attempted murder.
Following the sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow, Kastrati had an outburst, verbally attacking the judge and causing a disturbance in the courtroom.
Judge Gallacher, during the sentencing, expressed astonishment at the use of a chainsaw as a weapon, likening it to scenes from horror movies. The 10-year jail term was retroactively applied to May 2024.
After the verdict, Kastrati continued his disruptive behavior, shouting insults before being escorted away by guards. PC Cowan testified in court that he feared for his life as Kastrati aggressively pursued him with the chainsaw, threatening severe harm.
John Scullion KC, Kastrati’s defense counsel, mentioned a missed meeting with a social worker that led to a lack of crucial information for the case, which was deemed unsatisfactory.
Charges related to breach of peace, car theft, and traffic violations were dropped by the prosecution. The officers who responded to the incident were praised for their bravery and professionalism in handling the unexpected attack.
Chief Superintendent Rhona Fraser highlighted the dangerous situations police officers encounter in the line of duty, emphasizing the need to support them through traumatic events like this one.
Despite the distressing encounter, PC Cowan has returned to work, receiving necessary support. Ms. Fraser reiterated that violence against officers is unacceptable, and Kastrati will face the consequences for his actions.
