EastEnders icon, Mark Fowler, is renowned for his impactful presence on the long-running soap opera. Portrayed by Todd Carty, aged 62, this character, the offspring of Pauline and Arthur Fowler, was at the center of many dramatic storylines within Albert Square.
Todd debuted on the EastEnders series in 1990 and exited in 2003, with his character, Mark, departing on a motorcycle after being diagnosed with HIV. Tragically, Mark later succumbed to AIDS-related non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Decades later, the character’s nephew, Mark Fowler Junior, is set to make an appearance in Walford, generating excitement among eager fans. Meanwhile, Todd’s journey post-EastEnders has seen him venture into various acting roles, such as portraying PC Gabriel Kent on ITV’s The Bill from 2003 to 2005, along with appearances on programs like Heartbeat and Holby City.
In 2007, Todd transitioned to directing, making his debut on Doctors. He directed three episodes which aired in July, expressing his enjoyment of the experience and acknowledging the support of the production team and cast.
Additionally, Todd reprised his role as Tucker Jenkins in Grange Hill in 2003, making a cameo appearance and later returning for the show’s final series in 2008, commemorating the program’s 30th anniversary.
Beyond acting, Todd delved into reality television, notably participating in Dancing on Ice in 2009, where his stumble on the ice became a memorable TV moment. Although his scores were less than stellar, public votes kept him in the competition until the fifth round.
Continuing his reality TV escapades, Todd joined the cast of Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning but departed after just two episodes, citing a mismatch with the caravanning lifestyle. He was replaced on the show by former Coronation Street actor Brian Capron.
In 2024, Todd was spotted sporting a moustache at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester while starring in a touring production of Agatha Christie’s Moustrap, showcasing a different look from his previous TV roles.
