“Families Navigate AI Challenges With The Family Chat”

AI is increasingly shaping our daily lives, posing challenges for parents trying to keep up with the rapid changes. Families are facing the task of guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media platforms to school assignments and relationships. This was emphasized during the recent Safer Internet Day.

In order to ensure online safety for children in this era of pervasive AI-generated content, it is crucial for families to engage in open and honest discussions. As part of our initiative for 2026, we have teamed up with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to promote The Family Chat. This platform encourages families to have conversations about smartphones and online safety, aiming to alleviate the sense of overwhelm that often accompanies these discussions.

Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys, will be leading conversations with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter in the digital realm. The focus of our initial discussion revolves around AI and the valuable support offered by Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, which caters to parents with children of all ages up to 18.

The Karley family, comprised of Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, Isaac, and Ruby, rely heavily on digital devices for connectivity. However, they admit to struggling with understanding AI, acknowledging the potential safety implications of this knowledge gap. Identifying AI-generated content remains a challenge for them, particularly on platforms like TikTok where the realism can be deceiving.

The shift towards online homework, often facilitated by AI-generated resources, is a common concern for families like the Karleys and Giovanna. While recognizing the benefits of AI in education, they emphasize the importance of monitoring and evaluating its usage to ensure it aligns with the best interests of the child.

To guide children in using AI safely, families are encouraged to:

1. Explore AI Together: Engage in collaborative activities to discover the capabilities of AI in a safe and enjoyable manner.
2. AI Isn’t Always Right: Encourage children to verify information provided by AI and question its sources.
3. Check Age Limits & Privacy: Adhere to age restrictions on AI platforms and review privacy settings together for enhanced online safety.
4. Talk About What’s Real: Educate children on discerning between authentic content and misinformation online to cultivate digital literacy.
5. Use AI as a Support, Not a Shortcut: Encourage children to leverage AI for inspiration while prioritizing their own creativity and critical thinking skills.

The Karleys appreciate having access to the Online Safety Hub by Tesco Mobile, which equips them with tools and resources to navigate discussions about AI with their children effectively. The platform offers age-specific guidance on discussing AI safety and engaging educational quizzes to involve the whole family in the conversation.

Emmanuel highlights the value of this resource in enhancing their family’s online safety discussions, stating that it has facilitated learning and mutual support.
