“Former Teacher’s Holiday Horror: Legionnaires’ Disease Ordeal”

A former elementary school teacher revealed a harrowing experience of falling critically ill after contracting an illness while on a holiday to Gran Canaria that cost £2,000. Juliet Leith, hailing from Maidstone, found herself in a dire situation when she exhibited flu-like symptoms, joint pain, and breathing difficulties during her stay at a four-star TUI hotel. The 58-year-old was swiftly hospitalized on the Spanish island due to severe pneumonia.

Following her admission, Juliet spent four days in a medically induced coma, prompting her daughters, Jenny Gower and Josie Leith, to rush to her side as her survival hung in the balance. Tests identified her illness as Legionnaires’ disease, an uncommon yet severe lung infection that can be contracted by inhaling water droplets from sources like air conditioning systems, hot tubs, or infrequently used bathroom facilities.

Juliet’s holiday with her sister commenced on September 18, 2025, but within four days, she was hospitalized and diagnosed with the aforementioned disease. Despite initial treatment, her health deteriorated, leading to the coma. Reflecting on her ordeal, Juliet expressed disbelief at the severity of Legionnaires’ disease and emphasized the importance of raising awareness about its symptoms and potential dangers.

After spending 12 days in the ICU, Juliet was airlifted back to the UK and promptly transferred to Maidstone Hospital for ongoing care. Now discharged, she is under the supervision of a respiratory specialist as she continues her recovery as an outpatient. Seeking clarity on her unexpected illness, Juliet enlisted the assistance of serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the circumstances surrounding her contraction of Legionnaires’ disease during her holiday organized by TUI UK Limited.

In light of her experience, Juliet advocates for preventative measures such as running showers and monitoring air conditioning units to mitigate the risk of Legionnaires’ disease. She aims to raise awareness and prevent others from enduring similar health crises. Symptoms of the disease include breathlessness, high fever, and chest discomfort, particularly when breathing or coughing.

Jatinder Paul, the legal representative from Irwin Mitchell, acknowledged the gravity of Juliet’s near-death encounter and stressed the necessity of stringent precautions in public establishments like hotels to prevent Legionnaires’ disease. TUI expressed regret over Juliet’s situation and refrained from commenting further due to the legal nature of the issue.
