“UK Gov’t Faces Backlash Over Shamima Begum Release”

A new conflict is on the horizon regarding Shamima Begum as there are indications that she might be released from a Syrian detention camp soon.

The 26-year-old former ISIS bride has initiated a new plea to return to the UK. However, the Government is determined to oppose her reentry.

Born in London, Ms. Begum, who departed to join ISIS at the age of 15, had her British citizenship revoked in 2019. Her legal team argues that she was coerced and misled for sexual exploitation purposes at a young age. The European Court of Human Rights has requested clarifications from the UK regarding the contentious citizenship revocation.

Recently, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood reaffirmed the government’s firm stance on the issue, stating that all legal matters regarding Shamima Begum have been settled, and they will vigorously defend their position.

Uncertainty remains about Ms. Begum’s future destination as the Syrian government has reached a truce with the Syrian Democratic Forces, gaining control over the country and disbanding the Kurdish-led forces in the northeast.

Reports suggest that approximately 10 British men, 20 women, and 40 children are held in detention centers in northern Syria, with Ms. Begum reportedly located in the al-Roj camp.

Former Tory attorney general Dominic Grieve asserts that the UK bears responsibility for Begum. Both ex-Tory Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Labour peer Alf Dubs, who survived the Nazis as a child, agree that stripping her citizenship was unjust.

Judges in Strasbourg have queried the Home Office on whether the government should have considered whether Ms. Begum was a victim of trafficking. Lawyer Gareth Peirce highlights the failures to safeguard a vulnerable child and the lack of consideration for grooming and trafficking issues.

Ms. Begum, now 26, journeyed to Syria in 2015 with two school friends, Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana, both of whom are believed to have died.
