“Family Chat Campaign Promotes Online Safety for Kids”

As their 11-year-old son prepared for secondary school in September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a phone. However, they understood the importance of communication among themselves and with their son.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about children accessing inappropriate content and the associated mental health risks. She emphasized the need for parents to engage in conversations with their children to empower them in navigating the digital world.

Many families gifted smartphones to children during the Christmas season, prompting discussions on the challenges and benefits of such devices. To support families in addressing online device issues, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, has been launched.

Giovanna highlighted the value of participating in the campaign, as it provides insights and resources that benefit her family. She emphasized the pressure parents face in having all the answers but found comfort in utilizing Tesco Mobile’s resources for online safety.

The Fletchers, including children’s author Tom, have three sons, aged seven, nine, and eleven. The younger boys use tablets for messaging and gaming, maintaining communication with family members. When their eldest son started high school, they equipped him with a smartphone with restricted settings to ensure practical use without excessive distractions.

Giovanna stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue with children to explain the reasoning behind setting restrictions. She noted that excessive screen time is not only a concern for children but also for adults.

Implementing rules such as no phones in the bedroom and limited device use during family meals helps establish healthy boundaries. Gradually introducing internet access to children’s devices based on readiness is a strategy the Fletchers adopt.

Tips for ensuring children’s online safety include setting up child accounts, providing accurate age details, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining open conversations about online activities. Dr. Rebecca Whittington emphasized the significance of prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to prevent potential online risks.
