“Cancer Survivor’s Tragic Loss Inspires Shift in Perceptions”

A father, who battled and overcame cancer only to tragically lose his wife to the same disease later on, shared his desire for a shift in people’s perceptions regarding the illness. Brett Harman, a voice actor from Spalding, South Lincolnshire, was diagnosed with leukemia at 27 following symptoms of back pain and frequent infections. Enduring intensive chemotherapy, he achieved remission within four months, with no cancer recurrence since. However, his journey was far from over as his life was again touched by the disease.

In 2021, his partner Hannah Stinson was diagnosed with sarcoma while pregnant with their daughter, Summer. Despite Summer’s healthy premature birth, Hannah succumbed to the disease at the age of 29, just before her 30th birthday. Left to raise his daughter alone, 35-year-old Brett reflected on his leukemia diagnosis in 2015 as a pivotal event that equipped him with the resilience to face subsequent challenges. Initially, the diagnosis had a profound impact on his life, transitioning abruptly from work to hospitalization for treatment.

Fortunately, Brett’s successful treatment allowed him to resume his career and plan a future with Hannah. Their joy at expecting a child in 2021 was overshadowed by Hannah’s sarcoma diagnosis during pregnancy. Amid concerns about safely navigating treatment while pregnant, Hannah ultimately underwent successful treatment, enabling her to return to normal life post-delivery.

Tragedy struck the couple as Hannah’s cancer resurged, leading to her passing from sepsis in October 2021. Brett fondly recalled Hannah’s unwavering bravery throughout her battle, emphasizing her strength and positivity. Promising Hannah to care for their daughter, Brett embraced single parenthood, finding pride and purpose in fulfilling his promise to provide the best life for his child.

Transitioning to a new career post-pandemic, Brett now supports his family through his escape room business and voice acting endeavors. Engaged in diverse projects, he recently contributed to the Part of the Story campaign, narrating an audiobook that reimagines Sherlock Holmes navigating a cancer diagnosis to challenge societal perceptions of the disease. Motivated by a desire to destigmatize cancer, Brett emphasizes the importance of resilience and not letting the illness define one’s identity.

For those interested, the audiobook can be accessed on the Part of the Story campaign page, offering a unique perspective on cancer narratives. Brett’s story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, embodying a message of hope and strength for others enduring similar challenges.
