“TV Licence Cost to Increase: Refund Eligibility Explained”

The cost of a TV licence is increasing, but if you no longer require one, you may qualify for a refund. Currently priced at £174.50 annually, the fee will rise to £180 starting in April. A TV licence is necessary for viewing or recording live TV, or for accessing content on BBC iPlayer.

If you solely watch catch-up shows on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, without using BBC iPlayer, a TV licence is not required. However, if you stream live programs through these services, a TV licence is necessary. Failure to comply may result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Should you no longer need your TV licence before its expiration, you may be eligible for a refund if there is a month or more remaining on it. Additionally, refunds are available for those eligible for concessions such as being over 75 or visually impaired.
