A minor testified in court about being permanently harmed by their father’s involvement in a malicious scheme to kill their mother. Robert Rhodes, aged 52, fatally attacked his wife Dawn in their home in 2016 after discovering her extramarital affair. Rhodes, a carpenter, meticulously planned the murder, manipulating his child – aged under 10 at the time – into assisting with the deadly assault.
In an attempt to deceive authorities, Rhodes falsely claimed self-defense and coerced the child into supporting his fabricated narrative. However, in 2021, the traumatized youngster disclosed the truth to a therapist and law enforcement. The child revealed that Rhodes not only murdered Dawn but also inflicted injuries on them to fabricate the self-defense scenario.
During the sentencing at Inner London Crown Court, the child described enduring long-term mental health challenges and bearing a scar on their arm caused by their own father. They expressed the lasting impact of Rhodes’ actions, stating that the emotional trauma inflicted would persist throughout their life. The child condemned Rhodes for manipulating and gaslighting them, portraying himself as a survivor while inflicting irreparable harm.
Rhodes received a life sentence with a minimum term of 29-and-a-half years for Dawn’s murder. Additionally, he was found guilty of perjury, perverting the course of justice, and child cruelty, leading to concurrent prison terms. Despite maintaining his innocence through his lawyer and refusing to attend the sentencing, Rhodes was labeled a “coward” by the judge for his actions.
The judge emphasized Rhodes’ malicious motives, attributing the murder to sexual jealousy and highlighting the destructive impact on both families. Rhodes’ elaborate plan to tarnish Dawn’s reputation posthumously was denounced by the court.
