Google and Back Market Introduce ChromeOS Flex USB Kit

In a move that left many users concerned about cybersecurity, Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 nearly six months ago. This decision has led to a significant number of laptops missing out on crucial security updates, making them vulnerable to various cyber threats and malicious software. While newer devices can be smoothly upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often fall short of the system requirements, putting users in a challenging position.

For those facing this dilemma with unsupported laptops, the options include continuing to use them without updates, paying for extended support (ESUs), or investing in new devices that come preloaded with Windows 11. However, a new alternative has emerged for aging PCs to prolong their usability and prevent them from becoming electronic waste. Google has joined forces with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex serves as a lightweight operating system compatible with a wide range of older computers, transforming them into Chromebook-style devices. Once installed, users can access popular services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop.

Although ChromeOS Flex has been available for free download from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users now have the option to test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The popularity of these kits is evident, as they are currently sold out due to high demand.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers as Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, leaving users with a tough choice: upgrade to a new device or continue using an insecure, outdated one.” To provide an alternative solution, Google and Back Market have made the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit available, priced around £3, with the USB stick being reusable to further reduce electronic waste. Despite its affordability, the kit is currently out of stock due to overwhelming demand.

Google also highlights the environmental benefits of ChromeOS Flex, emphasizing that extending the lifespan of existing devices reduces electronic waste and lowers carbon emissions compared to manufacturing new laptops. Additionally, ChromeOS is reported to consume 19% less energy on average than other similar systems.

For those contemplating a switch to ChromeOS Flex, Back Market offers compatibility information on their website.
