“Conservative Frontbencher Under Fire for Abramovich Legal Ties”

A Conservative frontbencher faces criticism for serving as legal counsel to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, raising concerns from the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign (USC). The UK government is seeking over £2.5 billion from Abramovich to support Ukraine.

Abramovich is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the Jersey government involving assets worth more than £5.3 billion. Opposition figure Keir Starmer recently issued a warning to Abramovich, demanding the transfer of proceeds from the Chelsea sale.

Lord David Wolfson, Shadow Attorney General, is involved in the Jersey case on behalf of Abramovich. The USC expressed doubts about Wolfson’s role and speculated about potential implications for UK-Russia relations.

The USC called for urgent legislation to prevent sanctioned individuals from exploiting the UK legal system for delays. They emphasized prioritizing the rights of victims over the privileges of oligarchs.

Abramovich sold Chelsea FC in 2022 following UK sanctions related to his alleged connections to Vladimir Putin amid the Ukraine conflict. Funds intended for humanitarian causes remain frozen due to disputes between Abramovich’s legal team and the government.

In a letter to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, Labour Justice Minister Jake Richards highlighted Wolfson’s conflict of interest and urged clarification on the party’s stance regarding Abramovich’s financial obligations to Ukraine.

The Conservative Party defended Wolfson, stating he is not involved in the Chelsea FC matter, dismissing Labour’s accusations as political maneuvering. They emphasized their support for Ukraine and criticized Labour for what they perceived as hypocrisy and mudslinging.

Overall, the Tories reiterated their commitment to Ukraine, refuting any insinuations to the contrary as baseless attacks from the opposition.
