Robert Rhodes, aged 52, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 29-and-a-half years for the murder of his wife, Dawn Rhodes. After initially walking free during his first trial, Rhodes’ deceitful tactics were exposed, leading to his conviction. His manipulative behavior, which included involving his young child in covering up the crime, allowed him to evade justice temporarily. However, the truth eventually emerged when the child revealed the disturbing details.
The couple’s marriage deteriorated in late 2015 following Dawn’s affair with a coworker. Rhodes meticulously orchestrated his estranged wife’s murder in the subsequent year, enlisting the help of their young child. Despite painting Dawn as the aggressor in court, claiming self-defense, Rhodes’ lies were unraveled, exposing years of domestic abuse suffered by Dawn.
On the tragic evening of June 2, 2016, Dawn was found lifeless in their home, her throat fatally slashed. Contrary to Rhodes’ fabricated account of self-defense, evidence revealed a premeditated and brutal attack. The child’s testimony, previously coached by Rhodes, played a crucial role in bringing the truth to light.
Rhodes’ sinister manipulation extended beyond the murder, as he coerced the child into further deceitful acts, even instructing them to harm him. The child, burdened by guilt, eventually came forward, leading to Rhodes’ arrest and subsequent conviction for murder, perjury, and child cruelty.
The profound impact of Rhodes’ actions on both Dawn and the child was highlighted during the sentencing hearing. The child, now grappling with lifelong mental health challenges and physical scars inflicted by their own father, bravely confronted Rhodes in court, condemning his heinous acts.
Despite years of evading justice and attempting to rebuild his life with a new partner, Rhodes’ crimes caught up with him in 2024. Prosecutor Libby Clark commended the child’s courage in revealing the truth, finally ensuring that Dawn is remembered as a victim of domestic abuse rather than the villain Rhodes portrayed her to be.
Detective chief inspector Kimball Edey emphasized the despicable nature of Rhodes’ crimes, condemning his cold-blooded murder and the subsequent manipulation of his own child. Beyond taking a life, Rhodes irreversibly damaged the lives of those who loved Dawn, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.
