A young woman raced to the hospital where doctors warned her she had only a few hours left to live, uncovering her husband’s sinister secret in the process.
Hannah Pettey, aged 25, had been unwell for half a year, confined to her bed for the days leading up to her urgent hospital visit. Feeling something gravely amiss with her health, she contacted her mother, Nicole, who promptly took her to seek medical attention. Initially, healthcare professionals didn’t detect any abnormalities but Hannah insisted that she was in mortal danger if sent home. Subsequently, she suffered a seizure on January 18, 2022, falling into a two-day unconscious state.
Swiftly, doctors induced a coma for Hannah and conducted vital tests to determine the cause of her deteriorating condition.
Nicole, recounting the ordeal to CBS News, shared the shocking revelation from doctors, stating, “She was skin and bones… they informed me that she was essentially starving to death, giving her only a few hours to live upon arrival.”
Following an agonizing eight-day wait, medical professionals informed Hannah, hailing from Alabama, that she harbored an excessive amount of lead within her body.
Nicole described the dire situation, saying, “There was no space in her stomach to accommodate anything. It was completely filled with lead, in addition to traces found in her bones throughout.”
Doctors suspected that Hannah couldn’t have ingested such high levels of lead accidentally or independently. Law enforcement intervened to investigate, focusing on Hannah’s spouse, Brian Mann, and Nicole.
Authorities uncovered a disturbing truth that Hannah’s husband had been poisoning her. Despite Hannah’s belief that Mann, a chiropractor, was caring for her during her illness, he was, in fact, attempting to end her life through surreptitious means, possibly tampering with her vitamins.
Recalling a moment of pain and nausea, Hannah recollected Mann urging her to take the vitamins, emphasizing their importance even as she struggled to keep anything down.
After recuperating, Hannah initially considered reconciling with her husband but ultimately opted for a divorce following discussions with the police, who advised her to continue the investigation. Additionally, she assisted law enforcement in delving into Mann’s actions, uncovering his prior life insurance claims on her and additional policies taken out during her hospitalization, amounting to £3 million in potential payouts upon her demise.
Further revelations emerged that Mann had commissioned the construction of an X-ray machine in his clinic using lead, with a hired contractor disclosing Mann’s disposal of excess lead.
Mann was convicted of attempted murder and received a life sentence in August 2025, maintaining his innocence and diverting blame to Nicole for allegedly poisoning Hannah. Both women have refuted these accusations.
