“Water Bills in England and Wales to Rise by £33 Annually”

Water bills are set to increase in England and Wales by an average of £33 per year starting this April. This hike represents a 5.4% increase or £2.70 per month, surpassing the current inflation rate of 3.4%.

Regulator Ofwat had previously authorized water companies to raise average bills by 36% over a five-year period until 2030. Water UK stated that these price hikes are necessary to support a £104 billion investment initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure and preventing sewage leaks. However, activists expressed concerns about the financial burden these increases will impose on families already grappling with elevated expenses.

Water UK announced plans to offer additional support to approximately 300,000 households in 2026/27 through social tariffs, bringing the total number of supported households to around 2.5 million. These social tariffs entail discounted rates on water and sewage charges, with an anticipated average discount of 40%.

David Henderson, Chief Executive of Water UK, emphasized the importance of the increased funding for essential upgrades to ensure water security, boost economic development, and prevent sewage pollution. Mike Keil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), highlighted the growing concerns about water bill affordability and the need for transparency in expenditure.

Ofwat’s interim Chief Executive, Chris Walters, pledged to closely monitor company performance and ensure accountability in delivering promised improvements. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance support for customers facing financial difficulties, with over 2 million households already benefiting from assistance programs.

While switching water providers is not an option, there are ways to save money on water bills. Simple measures like reducing shower time and fixing leaky taps can lead to significant savings. Residents are encouraged to explore free water-saving devices available through initiatives like Save Water Save Money and consider installing a water meter for potential cost savings based on household size.
