Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a new email scam circulating in the UK. The fraudulent emails are taking advantage of the recent closure of O2’s outdated 3G platform, which has been replaced by faster 4G and 5G services.
Although most O2 customers are not affected by the platform switch, scammers are attempting to deceive users. The phony emails claim to be from Virgin Media O2 and falsely state that a SIM card upgrade is necessary.
Recipients are advised to be cautious and not interact with the deceptive emails. The fraudulent messages, designed with official branding, have subject lines like “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.”
Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these emails are not legitimate and should be deleted immediately without clicking on any links or responding. Users who receive such emails can report them by forwarding them to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This scam is a form of phishing, where scammers impersonate trusted organizations to obtain sensitive personal information. In some cases, scammers may send a SIM card via courier and request access using a PIN. The emails may also instruct users to log in to the O2 app with a provided password, potentially connecting victims to fraudsters through a “Contact Us” button.
If successful, scammers could access private accounts, gather personal data, and potentially lead to identity theft or financial harm. It is recommended to verify the legitimacy of emails from service providers by contacting them directly using official channels or seeking advice from trusted sources before taking any action.
