U.S. Vice-President JD Vance shared his thoughts on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. Vance mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to show strength in negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump, while praising Conservative MP Jamil Jivani for his support of Canada.
At the private event in Southampton, N.Y., Vance described Carney as a pleasant individual with whom he gets along well. However, he noted Carney’s attempt to appear tougher than Trump, despite compromises made by Canada in the deal. Vance highlighted Jivani’s influential role as a key advocate behind the scenes.
Referring to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre as a negligible figure in the trade talks, Vance emphasized the importance of Jivani’s involvement in the negotiations. He emphasized the need to alter Canada’s approach, acknowledging some alignment with Trump’s strategies.
Trump’s administration recently reached a temporary agreement with Canada to delay imposing new tariffs. Following intensified discussions between the two countries, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the deal. Reports suggest that the agreement involves reducing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, with Canada reciprocating by allowing American alcohol back on shelves.
Vance underscored the objective of reshaping Canada’s behavior through the negotiations. He highlighted Jivani’s discreet but impactful contributions to the process. The longstanding friendship between Vance and Jivani, dating back to their time at Yale, has played a significant role in fostering cooperation between the two nations.
Jivani’s proactive engagement with the U.S. government has raised concerns within the Canadian Conservative Party, particularly with Poilievre advocating for tariff-free agreements. Despite internal party tensions, Jivani’s efforts to strengthen Canada-U.S. relations through trade negotiations have been notable.
