A recent United Nations investigation expressed concern over reports of mistreatment against a well-known Palestinian physician, Hussam Abu Safiya, who was captured by the Israeli military in Gaza in December 2024 and is still being detained in Israel. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, has called for the immediate release of Abu Safiya, who serves as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza.
Various rights organizations and Abu Safiya’s legal representative have raised alarms regarding his precarious health situation and continuous detention without formal charges. Physicians for Human Rights Israel, an Israeli human rights group, has corroborated these concerns. The UN inquiry issued a statement condemning the treatment of Palestinian detainees by the Israeli Prison Service guards, suggesting potential violations of international law amounting to international crimes, with Abu Safiya’s health condition being a direct consequence of these alleged actions.
In response, an Israel Prison Service spokesperson dismissed the allegations as false and baseless. Despite the denial, reports from Abu Safiya’s lawyer indicated ongoing abuse and threats to his health, with a noticeable physical decline observed during a recent court appearance via video link.
The UN inquiry highlighted a consistent pattern of rights violations by Israeli authorities towards Abu Safiya, echoing previous findings. Israel, on the other hand, has rejected these accusations and declined to cooperate with the UN inquiry, accusing it of bias.
Separately, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention labeled Abu Safiya’s detention as arbitrary, urging his immediate release and citing violations of fundamental human rights declarations. The ongoing conflict in Gaza saw a surge in deadly incidents on Wednesday, with Israeli airstrikes and gunfire resulting in the deaths of at least nine Palestinians, including children.
The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of ceasefire violations since an agreement brokered by the U.S. last October. The conflict has claimed numerous lives, with over 1,070 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, and four Israeli soldiers reported dead since the ceasefire took effect.
