The way UK households communicate with friends and family is set to undergo a significant transformation. Starting in January of the upcoming year, consumers nationwide will transition from traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
VoIP represents a more modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls instead of the outdated analogue wiring. Despite initial apprehension, there are substantial benefits to embracing this shift away from copper cables.
Users of VoIP can enjoy enhanced call quality, increased reliability in connections, and additional features like spam call protection and call forwarding capabilities.
While the transition has been in the works for some time, a significant portion of the population seems unaware of the impending change.
A recent report from the telecoms team at Phonely indicates that 58.7% of UK adults aged over 50 are oblivious to the upcoming discontinuation of traditional landlines, despite extensive industry alerts and the deadline extension to January 31, 2027.
This lack of awareness could lead to a surge of last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially resulting in issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations, and increased pressure on telecom providers, especially in rural areas.
“With less than a year until the UK’s analogue landline network is permanently switched off, new research suggests millions of over-50s still don’t know it’s happening,” Phonely stated.
For many older households that prioritize stability and dependability, this transition signifies a significant change. As the 2027 deadline looms, experts advise against delaying the switch.
“The extension to 2027 has fostered a false sense of security,” noted Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely.
“The fact that nearly six in ten over-50s are unaware of this impending change should raise concerns for all stakeholders. Waiting until the last minute to migrate could lead to chaos.”
Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, commented, “These changes raise numerous questions for residents, and a lack of awareness could cause unnecessary worry, especially for older individuals who rely on their landline for social connections and safety. Contact your telephone provider to explore switchover options and ensure they are aware of any specific needs, such as telecare alarms.”
So, what exactly is changing with landlines, and how can you make the switch?
The UK’s copper-based PSTN network is being phased out in favor of digital VoIP services.
