The UK government is considering banning Elon Musk’s X social media platform due to concerns over its AI chatbot generating sexualized deepfake images of children. Downing Street confirmed that all options are being explored, including a possible boycott of X, with support from media regulator Ofcom.
Ofcom has initiated talks with Musk’s X and xAI regarding the AI tool, Grok, which has allegedly produced inappropriate images on the platform. The regulator highlighted issues with Grok’s chatbot feature, developed by xAI, that can create explicit content, including images of undressed individuals and sexualized depictions of minors.
In response to the situation, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson condemned the content generated by Grok as unacceptable and emphasized the need for urgent action. Downing Street emphasized the importance of safeguarding online users and empowering Ofcom to enforce penalties, including substantial fines and blocking access to non-compliant platforms.
The Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, has demanded swift action from Musk’s social media company, stressing the UK’s zero-tolerance policy towards harmful online content. She reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating offensive material from the internet and fully supported Ofcom in taking necessary enforcement measures against X and xAI.
Acknowledging the lapses in safeguards, Grok’s X account acknowledged the need for immediate improvements to prevent the creation of harmful content, particularly in response to inappropriate prompts. Musk reassured that severe consequences would be imposed on users engaging in illicit activities using Grok.
Musk announced the release of a new version of Grok, advising users to update their app promptly. The details of the updates in the new version were not disclosed. Efforts are underway to enhance safeguards and compliance with regulations to ensure a safer online environment for all users.
