A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.
The research highlights that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, are widespread among broadband customers. A significant 91% of users reported experiencing problems with their web service in the past year, indicating a lack of trouble-free connections for most households.
Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers encountering this issue. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices. Additionally, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds.
Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers. In contrast, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for offering more reliable services.
Plusnet stood out among larger providers for outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky. The study aligns with previous research from Which? indicating that smaller broadband firms consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value compared to major providers in the UK.
Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help users identify available broadband networks easily.
In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized the company’s ongoing investments to enhance services. Virgin Media highlighted positive feedback from independent sources, showcasing their top rankings in various broadband categories for customer experience and reliability.
Overall, the findings underscore the importance of quality broadband services as an essential rather than a luxury. With competitive deals in the market, consumers have the opportunity to switch to providers that offer better services and prioritize customer satisfaction.
