Multiple regions in the UK are bracing for heavy rainfall this week, with residents in the most affected areas being cautioned about potential flooding, travel disruptions, and power outages.
The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning, indicating that intense showers could result in property damage, flooding, and hazardous floodwater that poses a risk to life. Additionally, transportation services like trains and buses may experience delays or cancellations in flood-affected zones.
A significant portion of the country is expected to face persistent and heavy rain from around noon on Wednesday until Friday at midday, according to forecasts. The warning encompasses regions of Scotland, including Central, Tayside, Fife, Grampian, Highlands, and Eilean Siar.
The Met Office has also highlighted the possibility of communities becoming isolated due to flooded roads, power and service interruptions for certain households and businesses, and challenging driving conditions caused by spray and flooding, potentially leading to road closures.
“Initially intermittent on Wednesday, the rain is forecasted to become continuous and heavy, especially in elevated areas later in the day, persisting into Thursday and possibly Friday,” stated the Met Office. “Inland areas are likely to receive 30-60 mm of rainfall, with up to 80-120 mm possible in the highest exposed regions subject to brisk southeasterly winds. Given recent precipitation and snowmelt, localized flooding may occur.”
Coastal regions can expect lower rainfall totals, but strong onshore winds and occasional high waves are anticipated as additional risks. Moreover, the rain is anticipated to turn into snow on higher ground, particularly on Thursday and Friday, increasing uncertainty about the speed of downstream river response.
Residents in Central, Tayside, Fife, Grampian, Highlands, and Eilean Siar are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions in light of the expected severe weather conditions.
