During Pope Francis’ funeral service in Rome, US President Donald Trump faced criticism for his behavior, including using his mobile phone and chewing gum while others were solemnly paying their respects. Trump, along with other world leaders like Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prince William, attended the service where over 200,000 people gathered in St Peter’s Square to honor the late Pope who passed away recently.
Trump’s decision to wear a blue suit instead of the traditional black attire and his admission of attending the trip for political reasons had already sparked controversy. Criticism of Trump intensified when he was seen distracting himself with his phone and gum during the service, prompting negative reactions online calling his actions disrespectful and embarrassing.
The funeral proceedings began at 10 am local time at St Peter’s Basilica before the late Pope’s body was to be moved to St Mary Major, a basilica he frequented during his lifetime. Pope Francis requested a simple burial in a tomb inside the basilica, deviating from the usual triple-casket arrangement, in line with his wishes for a modest ceremony.
Amidst the funeral, calls for peace were reiterated, with world leaders like Trump and the President of Ukraine, Zelensky, in attendance. The encounter between Trump and Zelensky marked their first meeting since a contentious White House meeting in February. Images captured them engaging in discussions inside St Peter’s Basilica, alongside Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, demonstrating diplomatic engagements amidst the solemn occasion.
