“Toronto Woman Navigates Caregiving Role for Autistic Sibling”

Simone Abrahamsohn, residing in Toronto, shared her experience of transitioning into the role of her older brother’s primary caregiver following her mother’s passing this summer. Juggling the responsibilities of caring for her neurodivergent sibling, Stuart, who survived a left-brain stem stroke and is autistic, has presented both joyful moments and challenges for Simone.

Despite Stuart’s need for assistance with daily activities like feeding, transfers, grooming, and managing emotional fluctuations triggered by loud noises, Simone cherishes his company and the bond they share. Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalls moments of embarrassment and sadness when her brother’s behaviors were misunderstood by others due to his autism.

Acknowledging her own struggles with ADHD and the art of masking her condition, Simone strives to create a harmonious living environment for herself and Stuart. She has learned to adapt her behavior to avoid triggering Stuart’s sensitivities and ensure their cohabitation runs smoothly. Over the years, she has navigated societal expectations and perceptions, presenting herself as the outgoing sibling while distancing herself from Stuart’s experiences.

Having missed opportunities to advocate for Stuart in the past, Simone now embraces the chance to support and empower him as his roommate. By fostering open communication, respecting Stuart’s choices, and sharing responsibilities, she aims to cultivate a fulfilling living arrangement for both of them. Despite sacrifices like giving up her acting classes to prioritize caring for Stuart, Simone values their relationship and strives to make the most of this second chance to be a better sibling.

Through her journey with Stuart, Simone highlights the importance of understanding and acceptance in supporting neurodivergent individuals. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and dedication in fostering a positive environment for individuals with unique needs.
