Teaching Assistant Dismissed for Attending Course During Sick Leave

A teaching assistant, who was absent from work due to illness, reportedly attended a football training course that had been previously denied to him, as per a professional standards hearing. Jamie Harris, a staff member at Ysgol Bryn Castell in Bridgend, was discovered attending the UEFA A license course after a colleague spotted a social media post. Although devastated by his dismissal, Harris denied being dishonest but acknowledged that his initial response lacked integrity.

During the Education Workforce Council Wales hearing, it was revealed that Harris had endeavored for three years before finally securing a spot in the esteemed Newport-based course, renowned for attracting candidates nationwide. Having joined YBC in 2021, Harris meticulously saved funds to cover the £3,500 course fee after already completing UEFA B and C license courses. Notably, the elite UEFA A license course has been undertaken by renowned figures such as the iconic French striker Thierry Henry.

A graduate from the University of South Wales and a passionate football enthusiast, Mr. Harris expressed his joy at being accepted into the competitive course, believing it would enhance his role at the school catering to children with additional learning requirements. Despite facing personal challenges prompting his sick leave from June 3 to June 17, 2024, Harris maintained attending the course was crucial for his personal and professional development.

Upon his return to work, Harris was confronted by the school headteacher regarding his attendance at the course during his sick leave, leading to his dismissal. Despite initially being less than forthcoming about his actions, Harris eventually provided a comprehensive account of the situation. When questioned about the denied unpaid leave for the course, he clarified that confusion rather than frustration was his initial reaction.

Currently working at Woodlands special school in Cardiff, Harris acknowledged the optics of attending the course while on sick leave were unfavorable. He refuted claims that his sick leave was directly linked to the denied request for unpaid leave, emphasizing his genuine need for personal time during a challenging period. The ongoing hearing seeks to further explore the circumstances surrounding Harris’s attendance at the training course.
