A young individual is in critical condition after a shark attack at a renowned beach in Sydney, Australia. The incident occurred when the boy, approximately 13 years old, was jumping off rocks at the shoreline of Sydney Harbour’s Shark Beach on a Sunday afternoon around 4:20 pm.
Authorities from New South Wales Police responded to the scene at Hermitage Foreshore Walk, Steele Point Road, Vaucluse, near Shark Beach, following reports of the shark bite. The boy was swiftly rescued from the water by the Marine Area Command and Eastern Suburbs Police shortly after the emergency call was made.
Upon rescue, the boy, suffering serious leg injuries, received immediate medical attention, including the application of tourniquets, on board the police vessel Water Police 41. Subsequently, he was transported to Rose Bay wharf for further medical assistance by NSW Ambulance Paramedics.
Multiple medical resources were deployed to the scene, including an intensive care paramedic, aeromedical teams, and a helicopter. The teenager, with critical leg injuries, was then taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick in a critical condition for specialized care.
Shark Beach, situated in the upscale suburb of Vaucluse, is renowned for its netted swimming area and open waters. Shark attacks are exceedingly uncommon in the ocean surrounding Sydney. The beach has been closed in response to the incident, and swimmers are advised to refrain from entering the water for their safety.
