Easter baking holds a special place in my heart, especially when it involves the delicious Cadbury Mini Eggs. These tiny treats play a vital role in my holiday recipes, whether I’m making Easter nests or a creamy cheesecake.
As grocery prices continue to rise, I decided to investigate the quantity of Mini Eggs in a standard packet. Opting for the commonly available 74g bag at Tesco, which typically costs £2, I was surprised by what I found.
Luckily, the eggs were on a Clubcard Price offer during my shopping trip, but even at £1.45 per bag, I felt it was a bit pricey.
To determine the value for money, I purchased six bags of Cadbury Mini Eggs and meticulously counted the eggs in each. Despite all bags being 74g, the number of eggs varied. The first bag contained 22 eggs, costing around 9p per egg at full price.
The second and third bags held 23 eggs each, while the fourth bag had 22.5 eggs due to one egg being broken. The missing half was nowhere to be found. Similarly, the fifth and sixth bags also contained 23 eggs each.
Although I enjoy using Cadbury Mini Eggs in my Easter treats, the high cost per egg makes it an expensive ingredient. Rising chocolate prices, influenced by poor harvests and manufacturers’ profit concerns, have led to changes in chocolate products like Club and Penguin bars, which now have reduced cocoa content.
Thankfully, budget-friendly own-label chocolate alternatives are available at stores like Aldi and Lidl. M&S’s Speckled Eggs, priced at £2.75 for a 150g bag, have received positive reviews online and on Ocado.
Despite Cadbury’s Mini Eggs being a kitchen staple, I may explore other options due to their cost.
