Summer McIntosh claimed her first-ever gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming competition by setting a championship record in the women’s 400-meter individual medley in Irvine, California. She outpaced Jenna Forrester of Australia, finishing the event in four minutes and 28.01 seconds. Forrester secured the silver medal with a time of 4:31.50, while Agostina Hein from Argentina took home the bronze with a time of 4:32.54.
McIntosh expressed her satisfaction with the victory but felt there was room for improvement in her performance. Despite feeling she could have done better, she was pleased to represent Canada and secure the top spot in the race. The Canadian national anthem played after her win, eliciting a spirited response from the enthusiastic crowd, especially a group of young fans who cheered her on.
Later in the evening, McIntosh contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay, helping the team secure a bronze medal alongside her teammates Mary-Sophie Harvey, Emma O’Croinin, and Brooklyn Douthwright. The Canadian team finished with a time of 7:52.74, trailing behind Australia and the United States, who claimed the gold and silver medals, respectively.
In other events, Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada in the men’s 400 IM, finishing in 7th and 8th place. Japanese swimmer Tomoyuki Matsushita set a new championship record in this event. Additionally, Taylor Ruck from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a fifth-place finish in the women’s 100 freestyle.
