Starmer dismisses Trump, focus on UK-US alliance

Keir Starmer shrugged off the recent criticism from Donald Trump, stating that Trump is not comparable to Churchill. Starmer emphasized that the UK’s alliance with the US should not hinge solely on Trump’s statements. While some may argue that a shift in the special relationship could impact Ukraine, Starmer’s influence on Trump has dwindled over time. Starmer’s reputation as a “Trump Whisperer” has somewhat diminished, with Trump’s decisions potentially swayed more by his last conversation partner than by Starmer’s advice.

In a separate development, Pete Hegseth, known as Trump’s “Secretary of War,” announced that the US had targeted and eliminated the leader of an Iranian group allegedly planning an attack on the President. Although specific details were not disclosed, Hegseth confirmed that the individual was on the US target list.

Furthermore, a reported plot to assassinate Trump, allegedly linked to Iran, surfaced in a New York Federal court. The bizarre scheme involved a Pakistani man outlining the plan on a napkin in a budget hotel, subsequently discussing it with undercover FBI agents posing as hitmen in a strip club.

Hegseth faced inquiries regarding a US airstrike on an Iranian girls’ school that resulted in civilian casualties. While promising an investigation, he refrained from providing further information.

Meanwhile, Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary, came under fire for labeling Alex Pritti and Renee Good, who were killed by ICE agents, as “domestic terrorists.” Despite calls for an apology, Noem expressed condolences to the families but stopped short of admitting any wrongdoing.

In the political arena, the 2026 midterm campaign officially commenced with several high-profile primary elections. Republican Senator John Cornyn faces a runoff against Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general, prolonging the primary by two and a half months. The results highlighted Cornyn’s vulnerability and diverging alliances within the party, with Paxton aligning himself more closely with Trump’s movement.

On the Democratic side, State Rep. James Talarico emerged as the Senate candidate, poised to challenge the Republican stronghold in Texas. Talarico’s ability to bridge political gaps has positioned him as a potential force in the upcoming elections.
