Renowned snooker commentator John Virgo has passed away at 79 years old. Virgo, a native of Salford, had a successful career as a player, clinching the UK Championship in 1979. He breathed his last in Spain, his place of residence, on Wednesday.
The news of Virgo’s demise was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis who expressed his sorrow on a social media platform. The statement conveyed heartfelt condolences to Virgo’s family and emphasized his unwavering dedication to entertaining fans until the end.
Both the BBC and the World Snooker Tour expressed their grief over the loss of the legendary figure in the snooker world. Snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan, who considered Virgo a lifelong friend, and fellow snooker champion Stephen Hendry also paid tribute to the late commentator.
Virgo, who retired from playing in 1994, transitioned into a celebrated commentator, earning a spot in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. He was known for his iconic catchphrase “Where’s the cue ball going?” and his distinctive style, including flamboyant waistcoats and trick shots.
In addition to his contributions to snooker commentary, Virgo co-hosted the popular BBC snooker program “Big Break” with Jim Davidson from 1991 to 2002. Davidson, in his heartfelt tribute on Instagram, remembered Virgo’s talent and charisma that brought joy to many.
Reflecting on his career, Virgo shared memories of working with Davidson and highlighted the chemistry that made their collaboration successful. In 2020, Virgo and his wife Rosie Ries relocated to Spain for a change of environment to alleviate his long-standing neck injury.
Virgo’s legacy extends beyond the snooker table, as he candidly discussed his gambling struggles in a 2017 interview with Mirror Sport. Survived by his children from previous marriages, Virgo’s impact on the sport and his colorful commentary style will be dearly missed.
