Officials in Kenya have reported a small plane crash in the coastal region of Kwale, with 12 individuals feared dead. The incident occurred earlier today as the aircraft was en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The crash site is located approximately 25 miles from Diani airstrip in a hilly area, according to authorities.
Stephen Orinde, the Kwale County Commissioner, stated that all the passengers on board were foreign tourists, although their nationalities are yet to be confirmed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The specific breakdown between crew members and passengers remains unknown at this time. The plane reportedly crashed shortly after takeoff, igniting a fire that resulted in a charred wreckage. Witnesses described hearing a loud noise before discovering unidentifiable human remains at the scene.
Mombasa Air Safari, the airline involved, stated that they are working closely with the civil aviation authorities and will provide updates on the situation as they become available. The Maasai Mara National Reserve, famous for the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania, is a popular tourist destination.
