“Sawe Shatters Marathon Record, Makes History”

Sabastian Sawe made history at the London Marathon by setting a new marathon world record of 1:59:30, surpassing Kelvin Kiptum’s previous record of 2:00:35. Sawe clinched victory for the second consecutive year, showing a remarkable improvement from last year’s time of 2:02:27.

In a thrilling finish, Sawe and Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha battled it out until the final moments of the elite men’s race. Sawe managed to break away from Kejelcha in the last stretch, securing his place in the annals of marathon history. Kejelcha also finished in under two hours, claiming the second spot in a closely contested race.

Steve Cram, a former Olympic silver medallist, was left speechless by Sawe’s exceptional performance. He praised Sawe’s achievement, hailing it as a historic moment that defied expectations. Paula Radcliffe also lauded Sawe’s feat, predicting that it would reverberate globally.

Reflecting on his victory, Sawe expressed his excitement upon seeing his record-breaking time. He attributed his success to the support of the enthusiastic crowds and emphasized that his triumph was a collective effort involving everyone in London.

In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa defended her title with a time of 2:15:41, setting a new women’s London Marathon record by shaving off nine seconds from her previous year’s performance. Kenyan runners Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei claimed the second and third positions, respectively.

In the wheelchair events, Marcel Hug of Switzerland secured his sixth consecutive victory in the men’s race, matching David Weir’s record of eight wins overall. Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, successfully defended her title in the women’s wheelchair race.
