Samsung has revealed its latest lineup of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a threat to Apple’s future plans.
The tech giant from Korea introduced three new devices, led by the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a fresh design compared to its predecessors.
Unlike previous Fold models with a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has shifted to a shorter, wider “passport-style” design. This new look may seem unconventional when closed but offers a more practical experience when unfolded.
The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display, resembling a compact tablet rather than a typical smartphone, ideal for watching movies, binge-watching shows, and gaming on the move.
Samsung’s launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to unveil its debut foldable iPhone later this year, with rumors suggesting a similar radical design choice. By introducing this new design first, Samsung has taken a lead over its major competitor.
Beyond design, Samsung is also focusing on advancements in technology.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 stands out as Samsung’s thinnest and lightest Fold model yet, weighing only 180g. It features an enhanced hinge for improved durability and reduced risk of damage over time.
Upon unfolding, the larger display is equipped with Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating, enhancing visibility under bright sunlight.
Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, the device is supported by a 4,800mAh battery, enabling a rapid 63% charge in just 30 minutes.
With a dual-camera system for photography and Gorilla Glass protection against scratches, the device also incorporates Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI tools for smarter photo editing, enhanced productivity features, and improved search functions.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced starting at £1,699 and is currently open for pre-orders. In contrast, Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, expected later this year, might exceed £2,000 in price.
In addition to the Fold 8, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 but with notable upgrades.
The device features the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a significant camera enhancement with a 200MP main sensor, 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising improved low-light photography and 8K video recording capabilities.
The Fold 8 Ultra adopts a new Flex Titanium hinge and refined display structure for increased strength and reduced crease visibility. It houses a larger 5,000mAh battery for extended usage, with a 67% charge achievable in approximately 30 minutes.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at £1,899.
Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but now thinner and lighter than before.
The external cover display has been enhanced, accompanied by improvements such as a stronger aluminium hinge, faster performance, and upgraded camera functionalities.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is priced starting at £1,149.
