Sadiq Khan condemns Reform UK and Conservatives for attacking London’s essence

Reform UK and the Conservative Party are being criticized by Sadiq Khan for their disapproval of London’s essence. The Mayor of London accused both parties of opposing the city due to its diversity, progressiveness, prosperity, and the fact that it has a Muslim Mayor. Speaking at the Fabian Society’s annual conference, Mr. Khan urged his Labour colleagues to join him in promoting the advantages of immigration to combat the rise of far-right populism and nativism threatening the ideals of diversity, unity, and prosperity.

He highlighted that the White House’s ‘National Security Strategy’ recently suggested Europe faced ‘civilisational erasure,’ echoing similar sentiments spread by far-right groups like the National Rally in France, the AfD in Germany, the PVV in the Netherlands, and the Brothers of Italy. In the UK, Reform UK and the Conservatives are aligning with this narrative by portraying London negatively, which Mr. Khan attributes to their disdain for the city’s diversity, progressiveness, and success under a Muslim Mayor.

Defending London fervently, Mr. Khan argued that the city’s detractors were envious of its achievements, as London’s status as a leading global city contradicts their worldview. He criticized their tactics of spreading lies, creating false enemies, dividing citizens for political gain, and instilling fear by scapegoating “the other” for societal issues.

Emphasizing the positive impact of immigration, Mr. Khan stressed that migrants, including refugees, have significantly contributed to the cultural richness of London. From culinary delights to artistic treasures, London stands as a testament to how immigration has enhanced, rather than diminished, the quality of life in the city.
