A family residing in Biggar is facing significant financial strain due to the lack of nearby emergency medical services. Amy Haynes recounted an incident where her three-year-old son, Nolan, developed a high fever exceeding 40°C this spring, prompting the need for urgent care.
Upon seeking medical attention at the local clinic, they were informed that Nolan’s severe fever could potentially result in a seizure, necessitating immediate emergency treatment. However, the family encountered a roadblock when they discovered that all hospitals in Saskatoon, as well as those in North Battleford and Swift Current, had no available beds.
Faced with limited options, the only viable solution was a lengthy two-and-a-half-hour ambulance journey to Prince Albert, incurring a substantial cost of $1,300 for a one-way trip. Despite the financial burden, Haynes expressed her frustration at the situation, emphasizing the challenges of accessing timely healthcare services.
Nolan was diagnosed with a form of pneumonia and received medical care in Prince Albert for several days before being discharged. The family’s ordeal was brought to light by the provincial Opposition NDP during a news conference in Biggar, underscoring the broader implications of inadequate healthcare access in rural areas.
The Opposition raised concerns about the potential life-threatening consequences of delayed medical care due to hospital capacity issues, emphasizing the critical importance of timely interventions in emergency situations. In response to the incident, the provincial government assured that efforts are underway to enhance hospital capacity in Saskatoon by introducing an additional 146 beds.
Moreover, it was highlighted that ambulance services are not covered under the Canada Health Act, and there is no insurance coverage for inter-hospital ambulance transport. The case of the Haynes family serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by individuals in rural communities when seeking urgent medical assistance.
