“Rattlesnake Wrangler Relocates Record High Snakes in Lethbridge”

Lethbridge’s resident rattlesnake wrangler, Ryan First Diver, has been kept busy this year. Responding to 70% of calls made to the City of Lethbridge’s hotline regarding snakes on public property, First Diver has been actively involved in the city’s rattlesnake mitigation program. This initiative involves relocating snakes from public areas to their natural habitats, such as den sites, wintering grounds, or birthing areas.

This year, a total of 211 snakes, including rattlesnakes and bullsnakes often mistaken for rattlers, have been relocated, marking an all-time high. According to City of Lethbridge senior bylaw officer Dave Henley, the city typically receives around 150 to 160 snake-related calls annually. First Diver noted an increase in public awareness of snakes, attributing it to his social media posts that have educated residents on snake identification and where to seek assistance.

Residents are now actively sharing information online about snakes and cautionary measures. If residents encounter a snake and are concerned, they can contact the city’s hotline at 403-332-6806.

Contrary to common misconceptions, rattlesnakes are not aggressive, as emphasized by First Diver. He highlighted that snakes primarily rely on camouflage and are unlikely to attack unless provoked. Additionally, Stefano Liccioli, a senior biologist, stated that while rattlesnakes are venomous, no fatalities have been reported in Alberta due to rattlesnake bites.

The increasing number of snake-related calls in Lethbridge may indicate a rise in snake populations or heightened awareness among residents, according to Liccioli. Efforts are underway to study rattlesnake populations in Alberta, including tagging snakes with transmitters to monitor their movements and locate dens. Liccioli anticipates comprehensive data on snake population trends in Alberta within the next decade to guide conservation efforts effectively.
