The parents of a young paramedic who tragically passed away in an ambulance accident at the age of 21 have expressed their gratitude for their daughter’s service being acknowledged with an Elizabeth Emblem.
Gill and Graeme Clark, residents of Kent, will receive the award on behalf of their late daughter Alice, who lost her life on 5 January 2022.
The esteemed Elizabeth Emblem is conferred by the King to the family members of public servants who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Alice Clark was working for the South East Coast Ambulance Service when she met an untimely demise in a collision involving the ambulance she was in and a cement lorry on the A21 near Sevenoaks, Kent.
The ambulance driver admitted guilt to causing death by dangerous driving, and an investigation revealed that the ambulance service had failed to adequately address complaints about the driver before the tragic incident.
This emblem is a civilian equivalent to the Elizabeth Cross, which honors members of the UK Armed Forces who have fallen in action or due to a terrorist attack.
The Clarks, along with other emblem recipients’ families, met with Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, at Number 10 Downing Street.
Reflecting on the loss of their daughter, Mrs. Clark recounted the heart-wrenching moment they were informed of her passing. Mr. Clark shared that Alice was passionate about her work, transitioning from aspiring to be a doctor to serving on the frontline with dedication and compassion.
During the pandemic, Alice devoted herself to caring roles and completed a work placement with the London Ambulance Service. Described as dedicated, funny, adventurous, and brave, she was fond of traveling and had a vibrant personality.
Receiving a silver, oval emblem inscribed with “For a life given in service,” encircled by a rosemary wreath and featuring a Tudor crown, the Clarks will cherish this recognition of their daughter’s service. Alice’s name will be engraved on the reverse side of the emblem.
In addition to the Clarks, relatives of Stephanie Davies, a lollipop lady who lost her life in 2006, and Jonathan White, who tragically died in 1986, also attended the ceremony with Mr. Jones.
