The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL by enduring the longest losing streak in the modern era. Their 15th consecutive defeat came on Friday night when they were defeated 33-21 by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, extending their losing streak from the previous season.
This milestone surpasses the record previously held by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost 14 games in a row in 1994. According to CFL historian Steve Daniel, the Redblacks now hold the modern-day record for the longest losing streak in the league’s history.
Disheartened by this achievement, devoted Redblacks supporter Jimmy Fata expressed disappointment and a desire to identify and address the team’s underlying issues. The Redblacks’ struggles have been symbolized by their lack of touchdowns, a stark contrast to the tradition of cutting a “wood cookie” for every touchdown scored at home games.
In addition to setting the modern-day CFL record, the Redblacks’ losing streak has now become the third-longest in the entire CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss in the upcoming match against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second-longest losing streak at 16 games.
Looking back at the historical context, Daniel highlighted the evolution of the league post-Second World War, transitioning from amateur to professional status. The Redblacks are currently undergoing a roster rebuild, particularly focusing on strengthening their defense, as indicated by recent player changes made by head coach Ryan Dinwiddie.
Despite facing challenges, Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering support for the team through thick and thin, rejecting the notion of fair-weather fans. He remains optimistic about the Redblacks’ future, acknowledging the tough road ahead but staying committed as a loyal football fan.
