Minneapolis experienced another night of turmoil following an incident where an ICE agent shot a person shortly after the tragic death of Renee Good. The federal officer wounded a man in the leg during an attempt to apprehend an individual described as an “illegal alien from Venezuela” after a car pursuit, according to Homeland Security. Allegedly, the man being pursued crashed into a vehicle and tried to flee on foot before two individuals from a nearby apartment intervened, leading to the officer firing his gun and injuring one of them.
The City of Minneapolis confirmed that the wounded man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while the ICE agent also received medical treatment for their injuries. Minneapolis Police chief Brian O’Hara mentioned that the FBI was looking into the shooting incident, while Mayor Jacob Frey criticized the actions of the immigration office, accusing them of causing disorder in Minnesota.
Local residents gathered in protest against ICE and its actions in the city and state. The global spotlight turned to Minneapolis following the recent killing of Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Subsequent protests erupted after the latest shooting, with the Trump administration facing criticism for labeling Good as a “domestic terrorist.” The deployment of approximately 3,000 ICE officers to Minneapolis in recent weeks has added to the tensions in the area.
During the demonstrations, federal agents resorted to using tear gas, intensifying the already grieving city’s distress. Images from the protests depicted officers spraying protesters, emotional embraces among demonstrators reflecting rising tensions, and individuals carrying anti-ICE signs. The clashes between law enforcement and protesters further escalated the situation on the streets of Minneapolis.
