McLaren has issued an apology to their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite finishing in P2 and P4, the team was penalized for suspected issues with the minimum width of the rearmost skid on their cars.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella stated that both cars breached Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations by exceeding the required 9mm skid thickness by small margins. The team experienced unexpected porpoising during the race, leading to excessive contact with the ground, possibly due to accidental damage affecting the floor movement.
Acknowledging the unintentional nature of the breach and the absence of deliberate rule circumvention, McLaren expressed regret to Norris and Piastri for the lost points during a crucial phase in their Championship campaigns. The team also extended apologies to partners and fans for the setback, emphasizing their focus on the remaining two races of the season.
The disqualification has reshaped the Drivers’ World Championship race, with McLaren already securing the Constructors’ Championship. Norris maintains his lead with 390 points, while Piastri trails by 24 points. Reigning champion Max Verstappen now shares the second spot with Piastri, enhancing his chances of clinching another title after a victory in Las Vegas.
Both Norris and Piastri expressed disappointment over the disqualification, setting the stage for an intense battle in the final two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. With the title race poised for a thrilling conclusion, luck may play a significant role in determining the ultimate winner, as suggested by Verstappen.
Looking ahead to the upcoming races, Verstappen highlighted the importance of car performance in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, recognizing the challenge of closing the gap to the leaders. The season finale promises excitement and unpredictability, building anticipation for a dramatic conclusion to the championship.
