McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing frustration following a social media post highlighting the soaring price of a hash brown, which has climbed to nearly £2 at certain outlets.
The viral post features an image of a McDonald’s menu board showing the hash brown priced at £1.99 in the specific restaurant visited by the individual.
The post, garnering over 459,000 views, was accompanied by a remark stating, “£2 for a single hash brown. We’ve had enough.”
Reactions poured in with one person stating, “It’s becoming outrageous, I rarely visit but it used to be a budget-friendly choice.” Another comment read, “For that price, you could get a sausage sandwich.” A third individual simply remarked, “Unbelievable.”
Another user chimed in saying, “Those hash browns are fantastic, but £2 is too much.” While someone else reminisced, “I recall when they were priced at 59p.”
A spokesperson for McDonald’s addressed the issue, stating, “A considerable number of our restaurants are independently owned and operated, allowing them to set their own prices. However, they all share the commitment to delivering a top-notch dining experience and value for customers.”
This development comes after McDonald’s announced an upcoming adjustment in the loyalty program, requiring more points to redeem free items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards.
Currently, 5,500 points are needed for items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, 6,500 points will be necessary to exchange for these items, with 100 points earned for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
Furthermore, the points required for certain items will increase, such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries rising from 1,500 to 2,000 points, and a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie from 2,500 to 3,500 points. To redeem a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, 5,000 points will be needed, up from 4,000 points.
In response to the loyalty scheme changes, a McDonald’s spokesperson explained that the adjustments aim to offset rising food and supply costs. They also noted the introduction of new redemption options like Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich to enhance customer choices.
