A man involved in a fatal crash with a cyclist on the M62 in April 2021, and who later claimed he was too injured to face trial, was captured playing rugby in a surprising turn of events.
Stephen Naylor, aged 41, was driving his Audi at excessive speeds when he collided with motorcyclist Owen Baugh, resulting in Baugh’s death near Liverpool. Following the initial impact, Baugh was struck by another vehicle while lying on the road. Naylor sustained severe injuries after his car veered off the road and impaled him on a wooden fence.
After spending weeks in the hospital recovering, Naylor and his wife, Lisa, portrayed his health as significantly impacted by the accident, aiming to avoid legal consequences for the collision.
Despite their efforts, the truth began to emerge when Naylor failed to provide a blood sample to authorities upon leaving the hospital. Subsequent investigations revealed discrepancies in their claims, including footage of Naylor engaging in activities like shopping and participating in social events.
Eventually, Naylor confessed to causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while Lisa received a four-and-a-half-year sentence for her involvement in the deception.
In a statement, Owen Baugh’s family expressed their profound grief over the incident and thanked emergency services and law enforcement for their dedication in bringing accountability to Naylor.
