Madonna, the queen of pop, is set to reclaim her throne at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. With a record-breaking 11 nominations, Madonna has secured the top spot, surpassing even Taylor Swift. This marks the third time in her career that Madonna has led the nominations at the VMAs.
Her nominations for the upcoming ceremony include categories such as artist of the year and video of the year, all attributed to her hit album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film. Despite Taylor Swift, the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, receiving nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video “The Fate of Ophelia,” Madonna still reigns supreme.
Madonna’s previous domination of the VMAs nominations occurred in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. Her iconic 1984 performance at the VMAs, where she pushed the limits with a wedding dress and provocative belt buckle while singing “Like a Virgin,” remains a pivotal moment in pop culture history.
Among Madonna’s nominations are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for her track “Bring Your Love” featuring Sabrina Carpenter. The highly anticipated video of the year category will see “Confessions” competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Ariana Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
The public can participate in voting for 13 categories this year. Winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
